Policy Advocacy

In today’s interconnected world, Corrosion Science, Mitigation and Technology have become increasingly critical, given their significant impact on both the Indian and Global economies. Corrosion poses serious risks to public safety, infrastructure, manufacturing processes and product quality. According to the NACE “IMPACT” report, the global cost of corrosion is estimated at USD 2.5 trillion – equivalent to 3.4% of the GDP of industrialized nations and around 4.2% of India’s GDP. In light of these figures, addressing corrosion through strategic management is essential. Effective corrosion control strategies supported by an impactful National Policy have the potential of reducing these costs by 25% – 40%.

Given this background, CII with support from NITI Aayog launched its National Mission on War Against Corrosion. Drafting a National Policy on Corrosion Control & Management was taken up by CII Corrosion Management Division. With an objective to create a holistic policy document, Sectoral Consultation Groups have been formed for critical sectors like Oil & Gas, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Fertilizers, Material Engineering, Architecture & Construction, Defence & Aerospace, and Marine & Shipbuilding. These Sectoral Consultation Groups have been tasked to provide well-researched sectoral inputs for the National Policy on Corrosion Control and Management. The draft National Policy on Corrosion Control & Management will be submitted to NITI Aayog and Ministry of Steel for next steps.

The CII Corrosion Management Division offers a host of training programs specifically designed for industry professionals across sectors who deal with corrosion-related challenges, providing them with latest knowledge, practical insights, and expert guidance to strengthen their corrosion management practices. These sessions not only attract industry professionals working on corrosion-related challenges but also researchers from various academic institutions. They actively engage with our expert faculty to exchange knowledge, discuss current issues, and explore practical solutions. Our faculty comprises experienced industry experts, scientists, and professors. Two highly acclaimed programmes of CII-CMD are:

Continuing Education Programme

CII-Corrosion Management Division helps professional from different industries learn corrosion management best practices and implement these in their respective areas of work as well as hone their corrosion management skills.

One of our highly acclaimed programs is the CII–IIT Ropar Postgraduate Professional Development Program in Corrosion Management and Technology.

In addition to this, CII-CMD also hosts monthly Dr. Baldev Raj Memorial Lecture Series, where experts from across sectors and industries share case studies and deep insights into corrosion prevention strategies. Industry professionals engage in meaningful discussions with faculty seeking practical guidance on corrosion-related issues faced in their plants and operations.

• With an objective to showcase and recognize the good work carried out by an industry on Corrosion Management & Control, CII Corrosion Management Division institutionalized the CII National Corrosion Management Practices - Competition & Awards.
• The CII National Corrosion Management Practices – Competition & Awards recognize and celebrate exemplary efforts in corrosion management across various sectors in India.
• These awards aim to promote awareness and adoption of best practices in corrosion prevention and control, thereby reducing the economic and structural impacts of corrosion on industries and infrastructure.
• The competition evaluates entries in multiple categories, including corrosion management in organizations, infrastructure, and the use of innovative technologies such as IoT and digitization.
• Winners are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to effective corrosion management, innovation, and tangible benefits achieved through their initiatives.

Publications & Awareness

CII-Corrosion Management Division has published over 26 industry-specific booklets on:

• Corrosion management knowledge series on Materials & Corrosion FAQs, and practical Do’s and Don’ts of Corrosion
• These booklets serve as practical tools for engineers, maintenance teams and vertical heads, offering best practices, material selection advice, inspection methods, and cost-effective protection strategies.
• Help industry understand corrosion processes and control techniques
• Help industry reduce unexpected failures, enhance safety, extend asset life and lower long-term maintenance costs
